Congratulations to Dr. Michael Bond and Dr. Mike Abraham on the publication of their new book, Orthopedic Emergencies: Expert Management for the Emergency Physician. This 283-page book, with chapters on specific injuries, infections, and procedures, was published by Cambridge University Press.

Jon Mark Hirshon, MD, PhD, MPH, and Ben Lawner, DO, EMT-P, are co-authors of an article about the pain management protocol used by paramedics and EMTs in Maryland. The article describes the revision of the protocol using evidence-based guidelines, the training program that led to its statewide use, and the post-implementation assessment that revealed an increase in the per-patient dose of morphine. The article is available in the October issue of Prehospital Emergency Care.

Congratulations to Van Pham, Carina Sorenson, and JV Nable on their publication of a case report in the September issue of the American Journal of Emergency Medicine. They describe the management of a 74-year-old woman who came to the ED because of pain and swelling in her legs. She was ultimately found to have acquired Factor VIII deficiency.

Our department was well represented at the 4th International Emergency Medicine Conference, held in Cape Town in early November. The invited faculty for this 3-day event, sponsored by the Emergency Medicine Society of South Africa, included Drs. Michael Bond, Ken Butler, Emilie Calvello, Jon Mark Hirshon, Haney Mallemat, Terry Mulligan, Rob Rogers, Andi Tenner, and George Willis.

Michael E. Winters, MD, is the lead author of new AAEM clinical practice guidelines regarding the ED management of patients with angioedema associated with ACE inhibitors. The guidelines were formulated after consideration of 562 papers on the use of ACE inhibitors, which led to a subset of 27 that specifically address the adverse effect of angioedema. They are published as an article in the November issue of The Journal of Emergency Medicine.

Congratulations to Dr. Brian Browne on his receipt of the 2013 Health Services Leadership Award from the Baltimore Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America. This award is presented in honor of outstanding work in the medical community and as gratitude for support of Special Needs Scouting in Maryland.

Dr. Amal Mattu is the recipient of the 2013 Award for Outstanding Contribution to Education from the Amercian College of Emergency Physicians. This prestigious award was presented to Amal during this year's Scientfic Assembly, held in Seattle in October. Recipients of this award are recognized and honored for their contributions to academic emergency medicine, for making a major educational impact on the specialty, and for developing new teaching tools. Congratulations, Amal, on this well-deserved award!

Faculty members Mike Abraham, Fermin Barrueto, Dan Lemkin, and Jon Mark Hirshon published an article titled "Propofol for Procedural Sedation and Analgesia Reduced Dedicated Emergency Nursing Time While Maintaining Safety in a Community Emergency Department," in the September issue of The Journal of Emergency Nursing. The lead author is Joshua Reynolds, former EM resident, who is now a clinical instructor at the University of Pittsburgh.
