Baltimore County Fire Department (BCoFD) EMS Division
Baltimore County encompasses 610 square miles of urban, suburban, and rural land with a population of over 800,000 citizens served. The Fire Department is comprised of 25 career stations with 1100 members, and 33 volunteer stations with over 2000 members. Each volunteer company is a private, independent organization. The Fire Department responds to approximately 120,000 calls per year, more than 70% of which are medical calls. The EMS Division contains 48 Advanced Life Support units (31 career and 17 volunteer) and all career engines and trucks are EMT and AED equipped. Providers are either EMT (1600), CRT-I (90), or EMT-P certified (360).
The EMS leadership consists of the EMS Director Christian Griffin, the Medical Director Dr Andy Pollak, Deputy Medical Director Dr Morgen Bernius, Associate Medical Director Dr David Vitberg, and Assistant Medical Director Dr. Jenny Guyther. There are four EMS Shift Commanders. These Captains ride as “EMS 1” and supervise shifts A-D. There are 28 Lieutenants who work as EMS District Officers riding as “EMS 2-8” on each shift. In addition to running each shift, the EMS Shift Commanders serve as the QA Board chairperson, monitor implementation of a quality improvement plan (to include case reviews, quality assurance inquiries, and incident reporting), and supervise grants and research projects. EMS District Officers are the first line QA/QI officers who review 100% of all EMS reports to ensure protocol and SOP compliance, monitor documentation, and interface with the medical directors. They are the trainers for their shift, inspect the medic units and supplies, perform annual skill competencies, and are the liaisons with their local Emergency Departments and Nursing Homes.
The Baltimore County Fire Department currently welcomes resident and medical student ride alongs. These must be scheduled in advance and coordinated through EMS Captain Danielle Knatz.
