Baltimore County Fire Department (BCoFD) EMS Division

Baltimore County encompasses 610 square miles of urban, suburban, and rural land with a population of over 850,000 citizens served. The Fire Department is comprised of 25 career stations with over 1000 members, and 33 volunteer stations with over 2000 members. Each volunteer company is a private, independent organization. The Fire Department responds to approximately 120,000 calls per year, more than 70% of which are

medical calls. The EMS Division contains 59 Advanced Life Support / Basic Life Support units (A mixture of career and volunteer) and all career engines and trucks are EMT and AED equipped.

The EMS leadership consists of the EMS Deputy Chief Danielle Knatz, Bureau Chief Amanda Wensel, Medical Director Dr. Jeff Nusbaum, Assistant Medical Directors Drs. Morgen Bernius, Dr. Jenny Guyther, Matt Levy, Jeffrey Sagel, Adam James, and Rishi Kundi. There are 8 EMS Shift Commanders spread over 4 shifts. These Captains ride as “EMS 1" or "EMS 7" and supervise shifts A-D. There are 24 Lieutenants who work as EMS District Officers riding as “EMS 2,

3,4,5,6, and 8” on each shift. In addition to running each shift, the EMS Shift Commanders serve as the QA officers, tasked with monitoring implementation of a quality improvement plan (to include case reviews, quality assurance inquiries, and incident reporting), and supervising research projects. EMS District Officers are the first line QA/QI officers. They are the trainers for their shift, and serve as liaisons with their local emergency departments and nursing homes.

The Baltimore County Fire Department currently welcomes resident and medical student ride alongs. These must be scheduled in advance and

coordinated through Captain. Terri Reid.

BCoFD has a series of document to be filled out. The documents provide a general overview of the ride along process. An application is also
included. Please send completed documents to the ride along coordinator.
