Baltimore City is a very diverse, vibrant city with much to offer. The neighborhoods are also very economically diverse and unfortunately some of those neighborhoods have high levels of robberies and violent crime. The University of Maryland Baltimore Police maintains a high profile and this has resulted in few incidents of crime on the University campus. Shuttle services and escorts are also available to University of Maryland employees. Whenever you relocate, you should research the crime and safety statistics for your new neighborhood. You will need clinical privileges at the University of Maryland Medical Center as well as a faculty appointment with the University of Maryland School of Medicine. The process involves a significant amount of paperwork and usually takes about 120 days.  The Faculty Service Specialist will manage your faculty appointment with the University of Maryland School of Medicine, as well as the liaison to the medical staff offices at UMMC and VAMC for all credentialing processes. The HR Generalist will manage your Letter of Intent, Offer Letter, Contract, and Orientation (Benefits Enrollment, Parking, Badge, etc.)
Please be aware that Faculty Appointments may take 2-6 months for completion as they need to be reviewed by the Office of Academic Administration, various committees and/or councils. Before receiving a fully executed appointment by your requesting rank, you will receive an interim visiting assistant professor faculty appointment; these appointments take 4 weeks- 2 months to complete. The Interim Visiting faculty appointment is the appointment first approved regardless of official rank, making you eligible to start work sooner. Your fully executed appointment is usually approved within 6-9 months. interim faculty appointments is required for initial hospital privileges. Upon approval of the faculty appointment and hospital privileges, you will be scheduled for UMB orientation (review of Faculty policies, benefit elections, etc.) and a separate departmental orientation (acquiring parking pass, badge, completing employment verification/tax withholdings/ direct deposit, etc.).

The closest airport is Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport which is about a half hour drive from our campus. There are also shuttles available from the airport to area hotels.
