Ophthalmology- “Visual Diagnoses in Ocular Emergencies”

• Globe Rupture: Diagnosis can be made by: pain/ecchymosis, extrusion of intraocular contents, irregular pupil (points toward lesion), abnormally deep anterior chamber, low intraocular pressure (note: DO NOT perform tonometry or ultrasound if globe rupture is suspected), seidel sign • Septal/orbital cellulitis, in comparison to preseptal/preorbital cellulitis, will have pain with extra-ocular movement, proptosis. CT can help differentiate if clinically unsure • Hordeolum: (acute) obstruction of gland of eyelid and therefore red, tender, swollen vs. Chalazion: (chronic) obstruction of meibomian gland which is firm, circumscribed, nontender
