• A good quality ultrasound is very sensitive and specific for the diagnosis of AAA, but ultrasound cannot determine if the AAA has ruptured because most ruptures are retroperitoneal. • > 5 cm AAA should not be discharged without discussion with surgery as they need urgent repair. • Overcoming bowel gas: compress, move the probe a bit away from the gas, skip over the gas if only a small pocket, try again later. • If you see an aortic dissection look for a pericardial effusion. If present, assume Type A dissection.
