Veronica Pei, MD, MPH, MEd, is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and Director of our Global Emergency Health Fellowship. She is involved in two studies―one on the prevention and treatment of asthma and the other on the development of prehospital care in China. The objectives of the first project, the multicenter MARC 37 study, are to improve inpatient and post-hospitalization management of asthma and to reduce health care utilization by people with asthma and thus the associated health care costs. This study will characterize hospitalized asthma patients to assess concordance of their inpatient care with national asthma guidelines and to evaluate their post-hospitalization care. The results will facilitate the implementation of preventive measures for this high-risk and costly population. The goal of the second study, being conducted in Hunan, China, is to describe the status of the current county-wide prehospital care system and explore the feasibility of creating a provincial-wide model of prehospital care with a standardized training curriculum and patient care protocols. The investigators hope to demonstrate that the implementation of standardized prehospital training can reduce D2B time and improve the outcome of patients with acute STEMI.
