SACM Research Scholar

The University of Maryland Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking highly motivated, hardworking candidates from the Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission (SACM) for its Research Scholars Program.

This is a unique program that combines clinical observation and shadowing, research projects, and emergency medicine education opportunities. It will also provide the candidates with individual mentoring and preparation for the applications process, including help with their CVs and interview skills. In short, it will better prepare the candidates for embarking on an emergency medicine residency in the US by familiarizing them with different aspects of EM, therefore making them more desirable candidates and smoothing their transition into residency. 

The candidates must fulfill the following criteria:

  1. Fluency in spoken and written English (TOEFL or IELTS tests are preferred but not necessary)
  2. Passed 2 of the following USMLE tests: Step 1, Step 2 CS, Step 2 CK, with the 3rd test completed prior to starting the Research Scholar Program.
  3. Have a strong interest in and commitment to a career in Emergency Medicine

The candidates will be expected to do the following:

  1. Attend clinical shadowing shifts in the emergency department under the supervision of emergency medicine faculty
  2. Participate in one or more research projects pertaining to emergency medicine
  3. Attend clinical conferences, grand rounds and any other departmental or educational conferences that would be beneficial, including clinical simulation labs and cadaver labs
  4. Attend formal classes pertaining to epidemiology and biostatistics
  5. Receive individual mentoring regarding their residency application process, including CV preparation and interview skills
  6. Receive periodic feedback on their performance in different aspects to help target any weaknesses and improve their already strong qualities
